I sometimes give my clients a heads-up before starting a project: I might look a little strange for a second as I put on my VR headset... but trust me, it’s worth it!

Over the summer, I’ve been getting lots of questions about the VR headset I’ve been using. How does it work? Is it worth it? The short answer: Yes! There are a few learning curves as you get it set up (especially for Apple users and a Meta headset), but once you’re familiar with it, it’s a game changer for large-scale projects.

One thing to keep in mind—these headsets don’t play well with the heat or direct sunlight, so it’s important to take care of them properly. I purchased mine with this use-case in mind, and it’s held up all summer long with the care I’ve given it. It’s saved me so much time and money compared to traditional methods like stencil making, the grid method, or printing stencils. Honestly, even if I had to buy a new headset every year, I’d still see a return on my investment!

That said, I still use the grid method, doodle method, freehand drawing, and stencils depending on the project; and I always have a back-up plan just in case something comes up. The VR headset is just another tool in the toolbox, and it’s especially helpful when you’ve got a lot of large-scale art to produce back-to-back or in a tight time frame.

If you’re an artist: Have you thought about using VR? I’ve been working on some tutorials, and I’d love to hear if there’s interest in them! Let me know if you'd like me to share, or if I should keep them on the shelf for now.

My VR headset:

I’m use the Meta Quest 3. It’s a high quality yet affordable option for my needs. You can find more of the accessories and technology I use for my art on my Amazon storefront. If you purchase a Meta Quest device, register it here and we both receive some free Quest Cash that can be used towards your purchase of an app or game.

Disclaimer: VR headsets like the Meta Quest are not recommended for outdoor use. The sun can damage the interior lenses, so if you’re considering using one, be sure to protect it as best as possible and use at your own risk. For me, it’s worth the investment and the extra care, especially with how much time I’ve saved.

Here's a closer look at how I use VR to get my outlines down. This video went viral on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok!
